Laila alHusinni, Dearborn based Radio Talk Show
Host of "Good Morning Michigan"
Laila Alhusinni – born in Damascus, Syria. Graduated from The University of Damascus and worked for a number of local Syrian newspapers from 1990-2000. During that period, I moved between writing, translation, and public relations but my biggest passion was centered on communication and public speaking.
In 2001, I immigrated to the U.S. to begin my journey of journalism in the Diaspora. I began working for Al-Salam Radio and TV station and then moved to ICA Media, in 2006 to work as a news reporter, anchor, and interviewer for the company’s radio station, ICA Sound of Future. In 2007, I started my own radio program under the name U.S. Arab Radio: “Good Morning Michigan.” The radio show is broadcasted live from 8-9 am on WNZK 680/690 am.
I also worked for a number of bilingual institutions, such as the American Islamic Academy, that taught Arabic and English, where I prepared a number of educational programs. Additionally, I was part of a research study with Wayne State University, where I got to conduct interviews with the Arab American community and the newly arrived immigrants.
By establishing a company under the name of U.S. Chaam Media in 2007, I was able to do a number of cultural projects, within the last two years, to build bridges between the U.S. and the Middle East.
Among them, was a project called Cultural Arts Unlimited in which I invited a group of Syrian actors, stars in one of the most watched Dramas in the Arab world on a tour across the States. The purpose of this visit was building cultural bridges between the east and west and familiarizing the American mainstream with our accomplishments in the arts.
In 2008, I established a union for Arab American journalists. The organization is in its first stages of development but we hope that we could connect through it with other journalistic organizations in the United States. I am also a member of the Arab American Press Guild, ADC Michigan, and other important organizations.
Throughout my career in journalism and my radio show specifically, I tried to emphasize on preciseness and honest opinion following the news and staying away from propaganda. I hope that my show will serve to both educate and benefit society and for that to reflect upon my own life and performance.
I am an optimist who does not like to perceive the world in black/white and I aim to be free in my thinking and of the chains of prejudice and racism. I also aim to communicate the reality that we live here in the Diaspora, and to emphasize subjects that surround our culture because even though we live in a country as open as the U.S., the Arab American community has many issues in which it is unable to communicate to the American mainstream.
